Πως ήταν άραγε ο Θρόνος του Απόλλωνα στις Αμύκλες Λακωνίας; Το Αμυκλαίον αποτελούσε, σύμφωνα με τις γραπτές πηγές (π.χ. Πολύβιος 5.19.3), το #σπουδαιότερο κέντρο λατρείας των Λακεδαιμονίων. Σύμφωνα με τον Παυσανία, ο θρόνος είχε τη μορφή ενός μεγάλου εδράνου, στο κέντρο του οποίου κατείχε περίοπτη θέση το πεσσόμορφο λατρευτικό άγαλμα του Απόλλωνα, το οποίο ήταν τοποθετημένο πάνω στον τάφο του Υακίνθου, που χρησίμευε τόσο ως βωμός του Υακίνθου όσο και ως βάθρο του ξοάνου. Όπως τονίζει εμφατικά ο περιηγητής, ο Βαθυκλής από τη Μαγνησία ανέλαβε την κατασκευή και το διάκοσμο του θρόνου, αλλά και τις εργασίες διαμόρφωσης του ιερού. Την ακατανόητη μορφή του θρόνου προσπάθησαν να προσεγγίσουν με φανταστικές αναπαραστάσεις τους ο Quatremere de Quincy το 1814 και ο Theodor Pyl το 1852, ο Ludwig Ruhl το 1854 και ο Adolf Furtwängler το 1893. Σύμφωνα με τον Παυσανία, το άγαλμα έφτανε περίπου τα 14 μέτρα, ήταν ξύλινο, επενδυμένο με χάλκινα ελάσματα, ενώ στο κεφάλι έφερε κράνος και στα χέρια κρατούσε ένα δόρυ και ένα τόξο. Από την Αρχαϊκή έως και την Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο, το Αμυκλαίον αποτελεί σημαντικό πολιτικό και θρησκευτικό κέντρο της Σπάρτης. What might the Throne of Apollo at Amyclae in Laconia have looked like? According to the literary sources (e.g., Polybius 5.19.3), the Amyklaion constituted the most #important cult centre of the Lacedaemonians. Pausanias describes the throne as a monumental seat, at the centre of which stood the ancient pillar-shaped cult statue of Apollo in a prominent position. The image was erected above the tomb of Hyacinthus, which served both as an altar for the hero and as the base of the cult statue. As the traveller emphatically notes, Bathycles of Magnesia was entrusted not only with the construction and decoration of the throne but also with the architectural arrangement of the sanctuary itself. The enigmatic form of the throne inspired a number of hypothetical reconstructions by modern scholars and artists, including Quatremère de Quincy (1814), Theodor Pyl (1852), Ludwig Ruhl (1854), and Adolf Furtwängler (1893). According to Pausanias, the statue was approximately fourteen metres high. It was made of wood and sheathed in bronze plates; on its head it bore a helmet, while in its hands it held a spear and a bow. From the Archaic through the Roman period, the Amyklaion remained a major political and religious centre of Sparta. The Hyacinthia, the sanctuary’s most important festival, symbolised the political reconciliation between Dorian Sparta, represented by Apollo, and the pre-Dorian population of Amyclae, represented by Hyacinthus. #diazoma #synergies #culture #greece
